One of the most recognized spots on our stunning island is El Morro in San Juan, PR. This historic fortress has played a crucial role in defending Puerto Rico throughout its history. Much like the fortress itself, our people have faced numerous obstacles and challenges that have required us to defend our land and culture. Accompanying this is an illustration of a couple dancing one of Puerto Rico's most important dances, Bomba y Plena. This dance, which originated in the 19th century, emerged as a response to the working-class's need for social commentary and resistance, often highlighting issues of poverty, inequality, and daily life. This dance serves to empower our people, allowing us to express our humor, strength, and passion for our culture.
